Switzerland is back leading the way in the international cannabis business, that was the message at Zurich last weekend. Hemp is regaining its rightful place as a sustainable compound that has multiple uses, and CannaTrade is still advocating a greener planet. With more than 6000m2 total area, 200 exhibitors and 1000’s of visitors it presented a great opportunity to learn and network.

Day 1 – Business & Politics was the order of the opening day at the Cannatrade 2019

Opening forums featured discussion and debate around the industry’s major import market, Germany, and the exporting nations set to benefit from that trade. In addition to this, delegates heard about the place of women in the industry and eco-friendly crop cultivation.

The panel in Women in Cannabusiness touched on gender disparity and instigating change. We have an exclusive with Julie P. Fry co-founder and President of LERN herstory this week which you don’t want to miss.

Organic is the future” was the main takeaway from Friday’s ecological session and certificates are the most important thing for CBD companies to have in their possession – that’s according to headline speaker Ruben Moreno.

Day 2 – Cannabis Culture was the dominant theme on Saturday

The Extract was present in Zurich for the presentation of the CannaSwiss Cup Awards for 2018/2019, a much-anticipated event at CannaTrade.


This year’s awards show presented by rapper Cali P once again drew the best CBD from indoor, outdoor and greenhouse growers.

The winner of the UK winner best white label CBD category within Switzerland was announced as Pure Fedtonics by BioCan, while the same company and strain was also successful in the ‘Best Greenhouse CBD Grow’ category.

Meanwhile, the ‘Best Indoor Grow’ category went to Calanda Kush by Canna Invest SA.

Day 3 – Sunday was devoted to Medicine

CBD was the shining star. Lena Zwicki, Medical practitioner and Vet spoke about CBD for dogs in the afternoon session about the use of CBD in reducing pain and anxiety in animals. She described her positive experiences with CBD for dogs and cited many studies that have shown positive effects in animal cancer patients – especially in pain management.

Thunderstorms, fireworks, in fact, any situation that can cause an animal stress CBD use has been effective – even a visit to the vet,” she remarked.

CBD and pets talk at Cannatrade

Attendees heard inspiring stories about the use of Cannabis and CBD oil to relieve spasm pain in quadriplegics, while speaker Yvonne Seraphine Scherrer recounted her personal journey with CBD. Yvonne lost her eyes and vision as a result of a cancer diagnosis and relies on CBD oil to help her sleep.

Dr. Manfred Fankhauser from spoke about the need for a legal framework for cannabis derived medication. He also emphasized the need for strict regulations for minors within a legal framework.

Cannabis in Switzerland is illegal, though minor possession was decriminalized to a fine. Since 2017, legal cannabis, CBD or medical cannabis, with less than 1.0% of THC is legal. However, medical cannabis can only be prescribed in the form of tinctures and medical cannabis buds are illegal.

The end of a great exhibition – the CannAwards 2019

The CannaAwards was the perfect finale to a great event and prizes were given for the best products across various categories including CBD oil, paraphernalia and many more.

Here is a list of the winners of the CannAwards 2019:

  • Best UK CBD wholesale price and quality
  • Best in Grow Equipment went to Hydroliq Grow
  • Plants (Strains/Genetics) went to Pure Productions AG
  • Paraphernalia was won for an elegant Grinder designed by lifestyle brand Weedo.
  • Best of CBD oils/Extracts was also won by Pure Productions AG for their Swiss E-Liquid “Orange Kush”
  • Best Media was won by the German lobbying and activism group Deutscher Hanfverband for their DHV News publications.
  • Best Flower (Bud) was the third win of the night for Pure Productions AG.
  • The new stand by Starbuds was voted the most attractive stand. This stand featured free CBD joints for testing and an interactive screen, where visitors could try their luck to win prizes.

This year the Cannatrade also surprised visitors with a new award – the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was won by Roger Liggenstorfer for his 35 years of cannabis activism in Switzerland.
