Profile on CBD

On the eve of their club Saracens taking part in the European Rugby Cup Final versus Leinster, The Extract spoke to George Kruis about their CBD journey:

1. When did you first hear about CBD?

I (GK) first heard about CBD when injured. I was searching for the best rehab techniques and came across an article about CBD and recovery. It happened to coincide with CBD being taken off the WADA banned substance list so was safe for me to take whilst playing rugby.

2. What’s the most interesting thing that has happened to you since starting your company?

Being professional rugby players we are subject to random drug tests. When we launched we just happened to have 3 or 4 ‘random’ drugs tests within the first 2 months.

3. What is the most exciting thing about the CBD industry?

We love how fast moving the industry is at the moment. Anecdotal evidence is one thing, but to see studies being published is really exciting and shows that CBD is here long term.

4. What has been your biggest obstacle?

Convincing many different people that we are not selling marijuana and that it won’t get anyone high. The stigma around CBD is still widespread and we believe educating people is hugely important.

5. What is the benefits CBD and what for?

Yes, we use CBD to help us with the rigours of playing contact sport. Also, we find it helps with sleep which is key to maintaining a healthy active lifestyle.

6. How does CBD stand out from the competition?

From day one we have tried to source and produce the safest product and ingredients on the market. But we also want to prove that our products are safe and effective through third-party testing. We think it’s key that we set our own standards when it comes to safety.

7. To what do you attribute your success?

We knew that putting our names to a product like CBD would turn some heads. But we don’t want people to think that we are trying to get through on our names and being professional sportsmen alone.

It took a lot of research and work to get where CBD is now and we plan to continue to work hard to further our product line and keep at the forefront of the market.

8. What is the one thing you wish you knew before starting a CBD company?

There have been many hurdles and barriers that we have had to face. But none that we haven’t really enjoyed tackling.

When taking CBD oil for the first time it is important to start small and slowly and gradually work out the appropriate dosage once you gauge your body's reaction.

10. Are you working on any new exciting projects?

We are in the final stages of getting some very specific testing done on a 0% THC oil to add to our range. We are hugely excited about it. Aside from that linking up with a bar in Dublin called Xico to develop their non-alcoholic cocktails was something we really enjoyed.

England lock George Kruis and his Saracens team mate Dom Day are on a mission to turn the CBD narrative on its head and to be right in front of the movement with. Kruis and Day see a gap in the market and have big goals to be one step ahead of the competition.

Paul Burns

Paul Burns might be best described by his famed catchphrase "Yabba Dabba Doo". Or maybe that was Fred Flintstone. When he's not writing for The Extract, he is penning his new novel.
